St. Augustine Center for Living
The St. Augustine Center for Living’s mission is to address all aspects of the personal, social and emotional development of the residents we serve with the assistance of professionals and direct care staff. It is our goal to provide each resident with the opportunity to attain as much personal independence and self-reliance as possible in the least restrictive environment, thus assuring that each resident reaches his/her maximum functioning potential.
The St. Augustine Center for Living is committed to delivering programs and services of a habilitative and rehabilitative nature that addresses the individual needs of developmentally disabled adults, who require supervision because of a demonstrated dependence concerning their inability to perform independent life-skills or social functions.
Residents are exposed to age appropriate opportunities in critical developmental areas which include, but are not limited to self-help skill proficiencies, social/behavior skills and activities of daily living.
For the past three decades, the St. Augustine Center for Living has been providing housing and services for 45 adult male residents and 15 adult female residents in the four cottages situated on their well kept grounds. Each cottage has eight bedrooms, seven bathrooms, a combination living room/dining room, laundry area and a kitchen. In the cottage, residents receive training in self-care skills such as: showering, brushing teeth, toileting, dressing, and mealtime skills. They also get training in the area of daily living skills such as: sweeping, mopping, dusting, bed-making, bathroom cleaning, and laundry skills.
Behavioral programming is also provided and targets such areas as aggression, self-injury and property destruction. A Ph.D. psychologist oversees this. Each cottage also has its own 15-passenger van which allows residents to participate in a variety of community activities such as going to sporting events, Special Olympics, parks, the beach, dining out and local shopping. Facility-sponsored events include dances and parties. In the cottages, structured activities are provided with the exception of two hours of free time per day.
The facility has over 100 employees in addition to a consultant dietitian, physician, pharmacist, dentist, psychologist, and psychiatrist. It also employs a certified dietary manager, behavior specialist (CBA), four LPN’s, one RN and two QIDPs. Some of the key staff have been with the facility since its inception.
